Speaker: Dr. Tonia Nicholls, Professor, UBC Department of Psychiatry /Lead, Forensic Research, BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services
What stops us from putting the brakes on the criminal actions of some people living on the downtown east side with mental illness, addictions and poor or non-existent housing – for their sakes and that of society?
Dr. Tonia Nicholls is a professor at UBC in the Department of Psychiatry whose forensic research focuses on the intersection between the law and mental health. She will share what her research tells us about the situation, and what it might take to stop people living with mental illness and addiction from hurting themselves or others. We will also hear from two individuals with ‘lived’ experience.
