Agricultural Innovation: Exploring the Future of Food Production (9 Apr 2026)

Humanity's quest for food spans from hunting and gathering to modern agricultural science. Throughout history, we have balanced a diet filled with seafood, domestic animals, plants and wild-caught meat. Demand for food, however, continues to grow, and the impact of increasing food production on biodiversity and the climate is severe.

In her talk Dr. Newman will focus on emerging technologies such as indoor growing, precision fermentation, mycelium cultivation and cellular agriculture. She will also look at the opportunities for Canada as a current and future agricultural superpower.

Location: UBC Botanical Gardens

Join us for a fabulous tour of the UBC Botanical Gardens Magnolia tree collection. There are many varieties of Magnolia Trees flowering throughout the gardens this time of year. These trees have been collected from all over the world.

We are very fortunate to have secured a private tour with our knowledgeable guide Douglas Justice. Douglas is the Associate Director, Horticulture and Collections

There is a limit of 25 Probus members for this tour.

Following this tour there is performance in the garden that you can purchase separately for a cost of $18. Please go to botanicalgarden.ubc.ca to locate "Magnolia Musings: A Performance with Celeste Snowber" from 2 to 3:30pm. Celeste is a dancer, poet/writer award winner in the Faculty of Education at SFU. She has created a one time site specific performance at UBC Gardens.

Probus Picnic in the Park

Probus’ annual Picnic in the Park is an event you won’t want to miss. It replaces our July speaker and provides a great opportunity to get to know other Probus members, share a meal, play some games and have some laughs.

There is no cost to attend but we do need you to register in advance, so we get the catering numbers right.

When: Thursday, July 10, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Quilchena Park – there will be lots of us so head to the crowd.

Every second month, join other Probus members to dine out at some of Vancouver’s finest restaurants. We’ll choose a restaurant, let you know where and when, and you let us know if you’re available to join and we’ll make the reservation. Multiple tables for 6, and we’ll mix up the seating for each event. Not only will you eat great food, you’ll make great friends. If the numbers permit, we may even grab a private room, and all sit together.
